The word dermographism originates from the Greek terms "derma" meaning skin and "graphis" meaning writing, signifying the ability to write or draw on the skin.
Individuals with dermographism typically experience a hypersensitivity of the skin, causing the blood vessels to dilate abnormally and release histamine when stimulated. This histamine release leads to localised inflammation, resulting in the development of hives or welts that resemble the lines or patterns created on the skin's surface.
These raised and red welts usually appear within minutes after scratching or rubbing the affected area and usually subside within an hour.
